Mission & Goals

OWI-Lab gives companies access to test infrastructure and datasets based on real life measurements. Both the top players in wind energy industry and small SMEs are welcome. By pooling strengths and knowhow, we want to give wings to the efficiency, reliability and viability of offshore wind energy.

Setting up innovation and shared R&D projects:

OWI-Lab will actively set up and support innovation and shared R&D projects with regard to offshore wind energy. This will cover the entire value chain within this sector, from design and installation to operation and maintenance (O&M). It is our mission to support local innovation and research projects but also in partnership with European wind energy companies and knowledge centres.

The combination of high-tech infrastructure, the input from industrial partners and the strong partnership with wind energy researchers at Flemish knowledge institutions are making that possible. OWI-lab will become an eco-system in the field of Belgian offshore wind energy research and will cluster Belgium wind energy research on an academic and industrial level.

Hightech infrastructure

This project is investing in state-of-the-art measuring and testing infrastructure. These are delivering new insights and models that are indispensable in building on industrial knowhow and innovation.

The figure below gives an overview of the infrastructure in which the OWI-Lab currently invests. This can later be expanded according to the research needs of the industry. The collected test data and real life offshore datasets generated through this infrastructure should enable academic and industrial research projects. The investments can be divided into four subprograms:
